Pompeo: Our country to continue eradicating IS

The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Thursday that his country would continue its campaign to crush IS mercenaries in Syria despite Trump's decision to withdraw.

The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said during a joint press conference with the Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri that the US President Donald Trump had decided to withdraw the troops from Syria, adding, "We will do that, but on the same time, we will continue our campaign to crush IS."

He added, "The president was very clear about the threat from IS. The organization is still present in many countries even though we have eliminated 99%."

The Egyptian foreign minister noted that the terrorist network is still present, and we have seen that in many countries such as Syria, Libya or even in West Africa. This is a threat which we all face and we determine to eliminate it."

On the cooperation between the two countries, Pompeo said that Egypt make necessary reforms in the economy and energy sectors in particular, stressing that Trump will always remain the best partner of Egypt and the rest of the countries in the region.

"The United States will continue supporting Egypt in its fight against terrorism," said Pompeo.

On Thursday morning, Pompeo met with the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi at the Presidential Palace in Cairo within a Middle East tour that the US minister began on Tuesday from Jordan, as he has several topics such as Iran file in addition to the battle against IS and terrorism and the Syrian file.
