Fernaz Attia: Kurds must be provided with political cover

The statements made by Egyptian political activist and political sciences professor Fernaz Attia about the Turkish threats to attack northeastern Syria and the American decision to withdraw from Syria.

The US decision provides the environment for launching attacks on North Syria

At the beginning of her speech, Fernaz Attia discussed the decision to withdraw from Syria and said that "the decision of US withdrawal provides the environment and paves the way for the attack planned by Turkey."

She said that the withdrawal decision built on the pretext that it eliminated IS, she added "This talk is baseless because ISIS is still in Syria, and therefore this withdrawal allows the possibility for ISIS to rebuild itself to threat the countries that have been invaded before, especially Syria and Iraq."

Turkey is trying to cover up its economic crisis, distract attention from domestic policies

"From Turkey's point of view that it is suffering from a severe economic crisis; therefore, it is trying to compensate this crisis by acquiring new capabilities, whether it is territory or economic wealth from abroad," she said.

As I have mentioned that the Turkish authorities are trying to distract the attention of the Turkish people from the current economic and political crises, their tyranny and repression of all opposition forms, and draw attention to abroad.

Turkey is making crises with North Syria on the pretext that the Kurdish people are terrorists and a threat to them, so by these attacks, it wants to maintain security, at the same time of its threats, it has violated Iraqi airspace and bombed areas there on the pretext that the Iraqi government did not block the Kurdish threat to Turkey from the north of Iraq.

Pursuit of the Ottoman Empire

Fernaz added "Turkey is trying to expand in the region to achieve a new Ottoman Empire, the international forces will not allow Turkey to do so, in addition of the presence of regional forces like Iran that would not give the green light.”

"Turkey is trying to cut off the Kurds to strip the Kurdish people of the gains they have gained and their achievements in North Syria of building a democratic federalism in a try to break this project and eliminate it."

The experience of North Syria people is unique

The Egyptian political activist pointed to Erdogan's claims that North Syria is under one party. "This claim is contrary to reality because North Syria presented a unique experiment in democracy. It is a federalism. This federalism includes harmonious and peaceful coexistence of Kurds, Syriacs, Arabs and different religious sects. In contrary, Erdogan is representative of the tyrannical model of suppressing the peaceful opposition within his country, and causing unrest in neighboring countries by encouraging terrorist organizations, whether ISIS or the Muslim Brotherhood.

Russia sticks to inaction

On the Russian position on the Turkish attacks on North Syria, Fernaz Attia said that Russia did not show any stance, did not comment on the American withdrawal at the beginning, at last, it has welcomed the American step," saying that the American withdrawal serves the interest of Russia, which will seek further expansion in the region and Syria.

The International Coalition has to provide a political cover for the Kurds

Regarding the silence of the International Coalition on the Turkish threats and what it is supposed to do, Fernaz said, "Each of the countries of the International Coalition seeks to achieve the political interests, but what is required of the International Coalition is to provide a political cover to the Kurds not the withdrawal."

Fernaz Attia considered the position of the International Coalition towards the Kurds in Syria as "insufficient" and considered the American position "shameful" because it provides the opportunity for ISIS to expand again and threaten the neighboring Syrian and Iraqi areas.

'US withdrawal is temporary to change a certain situation'

Fernaz predicted that North Syria will be exposed to Turkey's attacks under American cover with Russian deal, and considered that the US withdrawal is "temporary and to change a certain situation for a certain period." "Then we will see that America will again interfere with the arguments of Iran's existence and the protection of its allies."

She considered the stability of Syria as extrapolating the Arab countries and the Middle East, stressing that the Arab countries do not have unified position, some of them support the survival of the Syrian regime and others support the opposition parties and wants to overthrow the regime of Bashar al-Assad and not sit with him on the negotiating table, whatever the situation.
