Britain warns Russia of underestimating West, vowing to deter it

Britain issued a stern warning to Russia on Monday that it would face a deterrent, accusing it of taking a stand against the West.

The warning came from the director of MI6, Alex Younger, in his second speech since his appointment in 2014.

Younger called on Russia not to "underestimate the West," after a retired dual spy in England was attacked by nerve gas, raising concerns about Russian underground activities abroad, according to Reuters.

In a speech to students at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, Younger said Russia was in a position of "permanent confrontation" with the West and that it had "used a chemical weapon on British territory."

The British official said Britain's intention was for Russia to realize that "whatever the advantages it believes it is achieving from these activities, it is not worth the risk."

Younger urged Russia, or any other country, "Russia intends to sabotage our way of life not to be deterred by our determination, our capabilities or the determination and capabilities of our allies," stressing that his country was not seeking to destabilize Russia.
