Legislation to limit oppression against women must be enacted'

On the occasion of the International Day of Combating Violence against Women, the Syrian Women's Council released a statement stating,

"The 25th of November was considered the World Day of Combating Violence against Women to examine their suffering from various forms of physical, psychological and moral violence, and the opportunity to urge governmental and non-governmental officials to take all measures to eradicate and eliminate the phenomenon of violence against women. Women are still considered the main victims of human rights' violations, whether at the global or national level.

With this year's (2018) anniversary, the International Day of Combating Violence against Women is taking place on the Syrian women under difficult circumstances in many ways. Violence against women has been practiced from the very first moment of birth, coupled with the norms, traditions and culture that allow looking at women with a discriminatory and inferior view in addition to a stereotypical view towards them in the educational curricula,  even the laws governing the country, in addition to economic pressures, poverty and unemployment. The severity of these factors is increasing with the bloodiest wars which we have been living in Syria since 2011, and which has affected the whole human rights system, and that led to the increasing of the number of victims. With the vast destruction and the increasing of the number of refugees, fled, displaced in addition to the suffering of the people from aggression, its diversity, various atrocities and serious violations against the lives and freedoms of Syrian citizens, certainly, women were and still suffering from bad conditions . All violations of murder, abduction, enforced disappearances, torture, raping, forced displacement and arbitrary detention have been widely committed against women. The Syrian Women were considerably put into the midst of bloodiest wars.

With the escalation of discrimination, persecution and the multiplicity of their forms on women in Syria, we recall the need to continue the struggle to stop all forms of violence and discrimination against women, whether legally, socially or economically, and the need to work continuously to change all discriminatory laws against women in the Personal, Nationality and Penalties Status Act , enacting modern legislation and regulations that limit the persecution and prevention of women from carrying out their duties and functions, including the attainment of their economic, social and political rights together with men and in accordance with their human potentials and characteristics which have been confirmed by religious teachings, principles, ethical principles, values and standards, universal human rights laws and legislation.

We at the Syrian Women's Council extend our congratulations to all the women of the world, salute the struggles of the local and international women's movement, express our full and sincere solidarity with all women, and emphasize that every day and every year is for the Syrian women. There is no way to achieve peace except with achieving the will and rights of women in Syria. We extend our condolences to all those who have martyred among Syrian citizens, wishing all the wounded speedy recovering. We condemn all the acts of violence, murder, assassination and enforced disappearance regardless of their sources and justifications. We declare our full solidarity with the victims of women. Those who have been subjected to arbitrary arrest, abduction, enforced disappearance, refugee women, raping or any other form of violence, the wounded women and the families of victims who have been assassinated and killed.
