Washington announces its withdrawal from treaty on med-range nuclear weapons

US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that Washington would withdraw from a mid-range nuclear arms treaty with Moscow during the Cold War, accusing Russia of violating it "for many years", as AFP reported.

Moscow, responding to a source at ministry of foreign affairs, said the United States was dreaming of being the world's only dominant power, accusing Washington of deliberately "undermining" the treaty for years.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said if the Americans continue to unilaterally depart from the various international agreements and mechanisms, and the examples multiply- from the joint comprehensive plan of action on Iran to the Universal Postal Union - we will have no choice but to take repressive measures, including those of a military nature, but we do not want to get there. "Russia has not respected the treaty, so we will end the agreement and develop these weapons," Trump told reporters in Elko, Nevada.

"We will not allow them to violate a nuclear agreement and to go out and manufacture weapons (while) we are not allowed to do so, we stayed in the agreement and respected it, but unfortunately Russia did not respect it " he said.

The Treaty on the Reduction of Mediom- and Short-Range Missiles (NRF) was signed between the United States and the Soviet Union in 1987. The treaty was signed in Washington by US President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, the two sides have pledged not to manufacture, test or deploy any ballistic missiles, winged or medium, and to destroy all missile systems with an average range between 1000-5500 km, and the short range between 500/1000 km.

By May 1991, the Treaty had been fully implemented, with the Soviet Union destroying 1792 ballistic missiles and ground-launched missiles, while the United States destroyed 859 missiles. It should be noted that the treaty is not limited in duration, but each party is entitled to terminate it after providing convincing proof of its necessity.

From time to time, Russia and the United States share accusations of violating the treaty. The United States is talking about Russia developing a new class of weapons and allocating funds for the development of countermeasures, while Russia objects to America's development of offensive drones and the transfer of M- K-41 "from ships to land, as in Romania and Poland.
