Library of 2,000 books opened in Serdem camp

After a full month of preparations, the Intellectuals Union in Afrin canton opened a library called "al-Asr Library" in al- Shahba canton. According to the members of the Union, the aim of the step is to encourage them to develop a culture of reading books.

The library was opened at Serdem camp in Fafin district of al-Shahba canton, during an opening ceremony attended by dozens of parents and members of the city's institutions, as well as officials of TEV-DEM.

The ceremony began with holding a minute of silence, and then the co-chair of the Union of intellectuals in Afrin canton Osama Ahmed delivered a speech and said that before 2012 the Syrian authorities were stealing their thought of service to them, and the person was thinking only how to spend his day."

For his part, the administrator of Serdem camp Idris Waqas referred to the role of intellectuals in raising awareness of the society and added "Today, our intellectuals are doing great work, for example the opening of this library."

The co-chair of the founding council of the Northern Syrian Federation Hadiya Youssef also spoke and expressed her admirations in opening the library and said "Today, in this difficult situation in Afrin, a number of Afrin children opened the library after collecting books."

In the end, Hadiya Youssef cut the opening ribbon and the audience walked around the library to see the books.

The library contains 2000 copies, most of which are written by Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan, books on politics, social, historical, cultural and women's books in Kurdish, Arabic and English.
