ZANA SIDI- JUMA MOHAMMED / KOBANÎ

September 15, 2014 is the day when a large-scale attack was launched by IS, in which thousands of its mercenaries, especially foreigners, were brought to the northern city of Kobanî. This attack was considered the biggest in the history of the terrorist IS, after fake plays against the Iraqi and Syrian armies, after they escaped from al-Raqqa and Mosul, and a number of other areas.

In return to the end of 2013 as the conflict in Syria began to intensify day by day, and most of the Syrian provinces have seen at that time mutual clashes and air and ground bombing, and dozens of factions and banners and various names emerged in the chaos that hit the country, but one faction had political dimensions and another military which quickly turned into a force accompanied by a media hype that was invincible, it is "IS organization."

IS which threatened the Syrian people and began a major international conspiracy against the Syrian people, especially in northern Syria, was controlled by an intelligence network of several countries, with the aim of the occupation of the largest amount of areas on the Syrian territory and pass their interests, but the battle of Kobanî tipped all scales and the calculations of those countries took another direction.

Birth of IS

The basic history of the emergence of IS, according to most sources, to 2004, where the mercenary Abu Musab al-Zarqawi established mercenary gangs carrying several names from al-Tawhid and Jihad and through the allegation of al-Qaeda to become a branch in the "Mesopotamia" to the establishment of al- Shoura Council and the formation of the so-called " Islamic Iraq State in  "in 2006, led by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

All these gangs were focused in their formations within the Iraqi borders, where they attacked the US forces that invaded Iraq and the Iraqi forces that were subject to successive Iraqi governments, from the invasion of Iraq in 2003 until 2011.

Beginning in 2014, the influence of IS mercenaries has expanded in Iraq and Syria, which entered in 2013, including the name of the "Islamic State in Iraq and Syria," and known as short "IS."

After al-Raqqa and Mosul cities, IS  attacked Kobanî

Despite their small numbers at the beginning, however, IS was in control of every city it went to easily, without any little resistance by the armies that were fleeing in front of the media machine of IS and not military force, so to speak.

50,000 Iraqi army and police fighters could not hold up for hours against 300 mercenaries who attacked the city and controlled government institutions and even the bank, which contained millions of dollars, which some observers believed was an arming and financing by the Iraqi government in corporation with the supporting countries for IS.

On the other hand, IS was extending in the Syrian center and control the entire province of al-Raqqa in days. It controlled  the major camps of the Syrian regime in northern Syria, such as the 17th  Division and 93 Brigade, near the Ain Issa, north of al-Raqqa. In addition ,hundreds of the "Free Army" flee the areas of Manbij and Jrablous and Tal Abyad and al-Bab in front of the progress of IS, which has become a difficult figure in the Syrian equation.

But the people of the northern canton "Kobanî", by the young men and women were part of the People's and Women's Protection Units, were able, for months, in extremely difficult conditions and in unequal battles in terms of numbers and equipment to protect their villages with limited military equipment against attacks by various military factions under different names called the "Free Army" at the beginning, and "Jabhat al--Nasra" after it and finally IS' attacks.

On September 15, 2014, IS begins dragging thousands of its fighters, led by foreign fighters, with tanks brought by mercenaries from Mosul and al-Raqqa, weapons belonging to the Iraqi and Syrian armies, and headed toward Kobanî city.

The situation in Syria in general and the north in particular in conjunction with the attack

In mid-2014, IS controlled the area of more than 180 thousand km 2 in Syria and Iraq, which is equal to the area of Syria. The presence of the Syrian regime was in the coast and some internal areas such as the capital Damascus, and the cities of Homs, Hama and al-Sweida in the same year.

Tons of weapons possessed by IS before its attack on Kobanî and has groups of mercenaries from all parts of the ground, which Turkey paved the ground for them transit to Syria, IS owned a military army of more than "300 thousand" armed in Syria and Iraq at that time, according to information made by one of the princes of IS who was arrested earlier by SDF.

Thus, the mercenaries are surrounded Rojava and blocked all roads between it and between the Syrian regions except Afrin canton, which had a geographical connection with the province of Idlib and Aleppo outside the control of IS, and the areas of Rojava is the next destination for IS if it tried to complete the expansion plan to include the entire areas of northern Syria .

Kobanî, in the middle of the northern areas, appeared to be an easy target for expansion, and the first Kurdish city that could be controlled by IS.

Turkish facilities for IS and Kobanî was selected

Shortly after the arrest of members of the Turkish consulate in Mosul by a two-month negotiations, the negotiations led to an agreement that Turkey would meet all IS' requests, Turkey facilitate the passage of thousands of migrants from various countries around the world to Syria, and the opening of the crossings of Jrablos and Girê Spî border, to pass food and explosives, in addition to electronic devices and the Turkish authorities have released 350 mercenaries were heading to Syria to fight in the ranks of IS , all in return for directing the intimidation of terrorism and the nozzles of their guns towards Kobanî.

IS, which was heavily supported by Turkey, took into account that Kobanî, which is the center of the area and forms the heart of Rojava, is the city from which the revolution of July 19 launched, the defending forces do not have a quarter of the weapons which IS has.

Perhaps, at the time, IS believe that the control of Kobanî means the beginning of control over the whole of the Syrian north and the foundation for forming a sectarian state that extends along the Syrian north and reaches Iraq. These goals are supported by Turkey and Qatar, that is to start crawling towards al-Jazeera and then Afrin and dispelling the Autonomous Administration project by controlling one of the cantons.

In addition to the fact that IS sought through the conquest of Kobanî forces to remove the forces that were present strongly in the areas adjacent to the areas of control in Iraq and Syria.

Kobanî, which has the greatest moral symbol of the Kurds, is the best chance for revenge for its failure to achieve its full goals in Şangal, where the Popular Defense Forces (HPG) aborted IS attempt to control Şangal during a military campaign on August 3, 2014.

This is in addition to seeking to tighten its control over the largest possible area of the Turkish border, which has long been used as a means to cross hundreds of foreign elements who intended to join it from the west, in addition to reports that a IS deliberately to import oil from areas of control in Iraq And Syria to Turkey across the border, it means that the control of Kobanî, which gathers distance of more than 80 kilometers with the Turkish border will contribute to facilitate those operations.

So IS turned the eyes towards Kobanî, to complete the expansion project in the region and achieve a set of goals in a single geographical area.

Tomorrow: Kobanî ends IS and the Turkish ambitions
