Iraq's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani called Friday for the formation of a government "as soon as possible on complete foundations" to eliminate corruption and poor basic services.

The supreme leader of Iraq's Shiites, al-Sistani, called on the government of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to meet the demands of protesters to provide jobs and improve basic services.

Al-Sistani said "The current government must find what can be achieved urgently from citizens' demands and thus alleviate their suffering."

The central committees organizing the Iraqi protests in Basra in the south of the country called for demonstrations on Friday under the slogan "Friday strategic demands."
