Greenhouses project in its summer season

For the fifth year in a row, the Green Houses project in Girkê –Legê has continued to support Girkê Legê's markets in order to make a variety of winter and summer vegetables. The production of the project fills a large part of the needs of the market in the district.

Although the project is the project of green houses, which are usually used only in the winter, but the production of the project is not limited to winter crops, since the beginning of spring season planting various types of summer's vegetables outside the halls and plastic rooms has begun which is supervisors call field production.

The area planted with summer vegetables this season about 37 dunums planted with various crops such as cucumber, tomato, eggplant, squash and other vegetables.

During the last week, the project began marketing its first crop of cucumbers and tomatoes to Girkê Legê district's markets, where marketing is expected to increase to fill a large part of the market’s need.

The first experiment was to cultivate 12 dunums of watermelon and melon

As part of the expansion of the project and the increase of cultivated areas, the project’s administration this year led to the cultivation of 12 dunums with water melons and melons. It is a well-known cultivation in the area and is usually cultivated by farmers without watering, but the fields of water melons and melons of the greenhouses project are irrigated with dotting technology. 15 workers, mostly women

The agricultural fields of the greenhouses project are currently staffed by 15 workers, who supervise the irrigation of the fields and the work of cultivating and harvesting. Most of the workers in the work are women, which is a work opportunity and source of livelihood for many families.

Climate variability led to the emergence of many pests

Project technicians are struggling to combat many of the pests, insects and agricultural diseases that have emerged this year as a result of climate variability. According to the technicians, the summer rains this year led to the emergence of many fungal and bacterial pests, as well as the emergence of many insects such as red spider and the fly in addition to the emergence of symptoms of fungal disease that harms agricultural crops.

Agricultural engineer Bêrîvan Khalaf confirmed that the technicians are working on the analysis of all disease cases and pests for diagnosis and control by the necessary pesticides, before spreading to prevent the damage of the crop.

The project supervisors hope that the summer production will contribute to filling the market need, and will contribute to reducing the prices of vegetables and achieving self-sufficiency.
