Planting vegetables achieves self-sufficiency for Girê Sipî people

The summer vegetable farming in Girê Sipî canton is fully self-sustaining for the people of the area, where vegetables are grown widely in agricultural fields, especially cotton.

Its importance is due to the self-sufficiency of the area in all its forms and the creation of job opportunities for the labor force and it contributes to the reduction of the vegetables prices in the area.

Vegetables are grown during the month of April each year and are of a good quality compared to winter vegetables or what are grown in plastic houses and called plastic vegetables.

The majority of the rural people cultivate small areas within their homes for those who do not own land or cotton fields, the villagers rely on planting a small area of ​​land to ensure that they do not buy vegetables during summer.

The residents of the area save the winter supplies in many ways, either drying or the straining and keeping them in bags and utensils designed for this purpose, which helps to save some of the expenses during winter, and the people distributed the surplus of their vegetables to relatives or neighbors.

The majority of the farmers do not rely on planting as a main season to profit from them, because the cultivation of a large area needs expensive costs on one hand, and low prices for the spread of cultivation on the other hand.

It also contributes to the reduction of prices, which is reflected positively on all cities in North Syria, so that the surplus in some cities, pushing traders and people to move to other cities to be sold.

Agriculture is suffering from difficulties, the most important of which is the spread of diseases and the continued need to control insecticides, fungicide and fertilizers, in addition to the continuous need for water to get the largest amount of production during the year.

According to Aboud al-Hamdish and Qais al-Amein, two farmers on al-balikh River, owners of fields depends on themselves to grow vegetables, and it is rare that the farmers buy vegetables during summer and some resort to cultivate in their homes for this purpose.
