Pompeo condemns Iran's threats, Rohani refuses to negotiate

Pompeo’s statement came during a joint press conference held between the US Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo and his Jordanian counterpart Ayman al-Safadi in the Jordanian capital of Amman where the American Minister arrived at on Sunday evening coming from Israel.

Pompeo said, "We all know the threat posed by Iran to the area. We discussed the ways that would allow us to counter Iran's influence in the area, and we discussed the Iranian nuclear deal."

In the Syrian file, the US Foreign Minister said that his country is committed to the ceasefire in south-east Syria, expressing his support for the efforts of the United Nations in Geneva to find a peaceful solution.

Pompeo said that his country has basic goals in Syria, namely defeating IS and providing humanitarian aid, in addition to easing the pace of violence there, preventing the use of chemical weapons and supporting the political settlement in Syria.

The Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman al-Safadi said that the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is the main reason for the lack of the area's regional instability, and its solution is the key to the comprehensive peace that we all seek at.

Al-Safadi stressed that the area of escalation in the south of Syria contributed to shedding the blood of civilians and caused further chaos, and again, he called for a political solution in Syria that would be accepted by the Syrian people.

He stressed that Jordan is fighting against terrorism side by side with the United States.

During the visit, the US Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo concluded his first tours of the Middle East after he was appointed last week.

In a related context, the Iranian President Hassen Rohani stressed in a telephone conversation with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron that the agreement which his country reached to with the major powers is not negotiable.
