Young man from Kobani killed in attack on protest in Northern Kurdistan

The Platform of Democratic Institutions in Mersin, Northern Kurdistan, organized a protest vigil in front of the Best Kıraathane Hall in the city of Tarsus, affiliated with Mersin, to condemn the attacks carried out by mercenaries of the Syrian interim government, backed by the Turkish state, against the regions of Rojava. Participants read out an official statement during the protest.

After the statement concluded, a number of young people continued their protest in the streets of the Gazi Pasha neighborhood, before police intervened to disperse the demonstrators. During the events, a person identified as Hüseyin Kanlıbıçak, registered in Seyrantepe and a member of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), opened fire on a group of youths in the street. Police later arrested him.

Baran Abdi (24), from the city of Kobani, sustained serious injuries. He was present as a guest at his aunt’s home at the time of the attack. He was transferred to hospital after being shot in the head, but later succumbed to his injuries.

Commenting on the attack, Ali Bozan, a deputy of the People’s Equality and Democracy Party in Mersin, stated that the gunfire targeted youths who had already dispersed after the demonstration, confirming that Baran Abdi was shot while he was inside his family’s home, leading to his death.
