SDF on Kobani Liberation Anniversary: Renewed pledge to defend freedom

The General Command of the SDF issued a statement today on the occasion of the eleventh anniversary of the liberation of the city of Kobani from the terrorist organization ISIS. The statement reads:

“The eleventh anniversary of the liberation of the city of Kobani from the terrorist organization ISIS marks one of the greatest pivotal moments in the history of the confrontation with global terrorism. This historic victory represented the true beginning of the collapse of the most dangerous and brutal terrorist organization the contemporary world has known, and firmly established the truth that the will of free and organized peoples is capable, regardless of the challenges, of toppling projects of darkness and savagery.”

“The Battle of Kobani was a battle of destiny in every sense of the word. It was not merely a defense of a city, but a defense of human values and of peoples’ right to life, freedom, and dignity. At a decisive historical moment, the fighters of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) stood against a systematic project of extermination, paving the way for the liberation of vast areas of Syria and putting an end to ISIS’s bloody expansion in the region.”

“On this great anniversary, the General Command of the SDF remembers with utmost reverence and pride the martyrs of the Battle of Kobani and all the martyrs of the war against ISIS, who sacrificed their lives in defense of freedom, dignity, and coexistence. It also salutes its fighters, men and women alike, who bore the burdens of this historic confrontation.”

“The victory of Kobani proved beyond any doubt that ISIS was not merely a military organization, but a transnational dark project targeting humanity, its values, and its future. Its defeat in Kobani was not only a military defeat, but an intellectual and moral one that dismantled its foundations and shattered its logic based on terror and fear. From this perspective, Kobani was the true beginning of the end of ISIS and a resounding message to the world that extremism cannot withstand the will of free peoples.”

“Today, eleven years after that historic victory, the city of Kobani is once again subjected to attacks, siege, and continuous pressure, in overt attempts to undermine the will of its people and strike the state of stability achieved through immense sacrifices. Targeting Kobani today is a direct attack on the symbolism of victory over ISIS and an attempt to exact revenge on a city that shattered its project. This cannot be separated from efforts to undermine stability and open the door to chaos and the return of terrorism.”

“In this context, the SDF renew their full commitment to continuing the war against ISIS and warn that any destabilization in the areas of North and East Syria constitutes a direct threat to regional and international security, granting terrorist organizations real opportunities to reorganize their ranks and revive their activities.”

“On this occasion, the General Command of the Syrian Democratic Forces addresses a clear and explicit message to the international community: protecting the gains of the victory over ISIS and ensuring the security and stability of the regions that paid a heavy price in this war is not a political option, but a shared moral and legal responsibility. Silence regarding what Kobani is facing contradicts the sacrifices made to defeat terrorism and undermines international efforts to combat it.”

“In conclusion, the Syrian Democratic Forces affirm that Kobani will remain an eternal symbol of resistance and resilience, and that the victory achieved eleven years ago is not a memory to be recalled, but a renewed pledge to defend freedom, protect the achievements of the martyrs, and build a safe, democratic future for all the peoples of Syria.”
