Women's Protection Units: Syria will rise by women, not their killers

In this context, the General Command of the YPJ issued a statement today, for the attendance of mercenary "Hatim Abu Shakra", who assassinated the Secretary-General of the Future Syria Party, Hevrin Khalaf, in the so-called "Victory Conference" in Damascus, saying:

In Syria, after the fall of the Baath regime, which did not respond to any social demands, the crisis is still ongoing and the fate of women and peoples faces many dangers and pains.

At the historical stage that the world, and particularly the Middle East, is going through, if the intensive and long-term negotiations for the country's reconstruction are not treated with the utmost sensitivity, they will lose their credibility and legitimacy. While this, in the given context, is suspicious because the fate of an entire region was being decided by only armed groups behind closed doors in Damascus on January 29, Hatem Abu Shakra, the leader of the Ahrar al-Sharqiya group that killed the Secretary-General of the Future Syria Party Hevrin Khalaf in 2019, joined this suspicious conference, and his appointment by the Damascus authorities is a disregard for the struggle of Kurdish women, which is undoubtedly recognized by the entire world. Worse still, it signals that the new Syria they sought to establish had no place for women. No conference or decision can be legitimate if women and people do not take part in it, and we as Women's Protection Units do not consider this conference and its decisions legitimate either.

14 Years of Resistance

For 14 years, we waged an historic resistance as freedom fighters in the ranks of the Syrian Democratic Forces and the People's Protection Units under the leadership of the Women's Protection Units against ISIS-which the AKP called and supported as good sons. We are waging this resistance not only to protect our people, but also to protect humanity against the attacks and massacres being committed in many cities of Europe and recently in the United States. We have been fighting against ISIS and the mercenaries supported by Turkey for many years, and the whole world is witness to this. We cannot accept all that after the jihadist mentality and its representatives attempt to build a state and revive old jihadists who have gained new clothes. Today, they are attacking the peoples of North and East Syria. It is all right, and one can save the appearance with a tie; that does not mean we turn a blind eye to the murderers who have shed the blood of thousands of people, committed massacres, beheaded people, and even went so far as to brutally dismember the bodies of women.

the killers must be held accountable

These killers must be tried immediately and punished with the punishments they deserve, and the fascist AKP leader Erdogan, who nurtured them, exploited them and sent them to the square, must be tried before the International Criminal Court. This is the moral duty of every individual and every institution that defends humanity and democracy, especially all women in the world.

Syria will be built by women

When women began to be killed, social collapse began in this geography. Therefore, the new Syria will rise by the hands of women who fight for freedom, not by the killers of women.
