Women’s delegation from NE Syria meets academics, organization in Germany

Yesterday, Tuesday, the delegation met with a number of academic figures, including university professors, doctors, and researchers from Germany, Iran, and Kurdistan.

The meeting addressed the current developments in Syria, particularly the situation in NE Syria, alongside women’s issues and the educational process in the region. Participants also discussed the state of the three universities in NE Syria, with the delegation stressing the need to enhance academic relations with German universities.

The delegation highlighted the importance of shedding light on regional issues through research and studies, praising the positive nature of the meeting, especially since several participants are conducting research on the Kurdish issue and social diversity in NE Syria.

In a related context, the delegation held another meeting with the German organization TERRE DES FEMMES (TDF)— “Land of Women.” TDF is Germany’s largest women’s rights organization, with over two thousand members and more than three decades of experience in awareness-raising, advocacy campaigns, public relations, networking, and lobbying at national and international levels.

The organization focuses on issues affecting women and girls related to gender-based violence, including human trafficking, forced marriage, crimes under other labels, domestic and sexual violence, as well as combating female genital mutilation.

During the meeting, the situation of women in Syria in general, and in NE Syria in particular, was discussed, along with the challenges and risks faced by Syrian women amid political changes. Both sides also focused on ways to strengthen cooperation through supporting women-centered projects and examining the family law in NE Syria, which aligns with the organization’s vision regarding women’s issues.

The delegation described the meetings as productive and positive, emphasizing the importance of continued communication and cooperation on educational, rights-related, and women’s issues.

These meetings are part of a European diplomatic tour launched by the NE Syria women’s delegation on September 6. During the tour, the delegation met with several human rights and women’s organizations, as well as French parliament members, and participated in cultural and artistic lectures and festivals.

The delegation includes: Amina Omar, administrator at the Women’s Council in Northeast Syria; Mona Al-Youssef, spokesperson for the Syrian Women’s Council; Shahrzad Al-Jasim, spokesperson for the Zenobia Women’s Gathering; Jian Hussein, member of the Kongra Star Coordination; and Georgette Barsom, president of the Syriac Women’s Union.
