The US special envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, announced that Damascus and Tel Aviv are on the verge of finalizing a US-brokered “de-escalation” deal, which would stipulate a “halt to Israeli attacks in exchange for Syria’s commitment not to move heavy military vehicles or equipment near the border.”

Barrack noted in remarks to journalists on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York on Tuesday that the proposed agreement represents “the first step toward a broader security understanding” between the two sides, and that the ongoing talks are being conducted in a spirit of “good faith,” in his words.

He added that “US President Donald Trump had hoped to announce the agreement this week, but the process has not made sufficient progress,” pointing out that “the Jewish New Year holiday contributed to delaying the negotiations.”
