WFP launches emergency aid for Sweida residents

According to WFP’s official website, this expansion builds on the agency’s ongoing support across Sweida, Daraa, and Rural Damascus, following a surge in violence that has displaced thousands and left communities struggling for survival.

The report added that hostilities in Sweida and surrounding areas have triggered mass displacement, disrupted local markets, and worsened food security and humanitarian conditions.

In the coming weeks, WFP will distribute emergency food baskets, fortified wheat flour for bread production, and specialized nutritional products to nearly 600,000 people—covering the entire population of Sweida Governorate, as well as families in adjacent regions.

The initiative aims to prevent further deterioration of the humanitarian situation and to preserve social cohesion at this critical juncture, WFP stated.

Marianne Ward, WFP’s Country Director in Syria, stressed: “Expanding this response now is essential to prevent this emergency from escalating into a larger crisis requiring long-term interventions.”

She further emphasized that bread remains a vital lifeline for Syrian families and a cornerstone of WFP’s humanitarian response.
