Deir Atiyah church congregation rejects exclusion by Damascus authorities from local representation

The congregation of Deir Atiyah Church in rural Damascus affirmed that the exclusion of their representatives by Damascus government officials from the municipal council does not reflect the will of the local residents. They emphasized that the community’s cohesive social fabric remains a “red line.”

On Wednesday, the Deir Atiyah Church congregation issued an official statement expressing its position on recent developments concerning local representation in the town’s municipal council. The statement underscored their steadfast commitment to national unity and the social cohesion that unites the people of Deir Atiyah across all affiliations.

A few days ago, the Damascus government issued a decree appointing members to the municipal council’s executive office, completely excluding Christians who historically have enjoyed natural representation and participated in decision-making as integral members of the town, rather than solely as a religious minority.

The church’s statement, published on its social media platforms, condemned the recent exclusion as not representing the will of the town’s inhabitants and described it as a “deep wound in the collective consciousness.” It reaffirmed that Deir Atiyah has always stood as a model of fraternity among its diverse communities, both Muslim and Christian.

The congregation highlighted that the town’s land “has borne martyrs” and throughout its history “has refused to bow before any force.” They called for addressing the issue with a spirit of justice and equality to ensure all residents participate in local decision-making. The statement also firmly rejected “any partisan or factional considerations that threaten social unity,” affirming that the community’s social fabric is a “red line.”

The congregation demanded a reconsideration of the recent administrative decision to safeguard the rights of all Deir Atiyah residents and to reinforce the principles of genuine partnership and citizenship. They added, “We do not seek privileges, but rather a natural and national right to participate within state institutions, reflecting the historic cohesion of the town’s people.”

The statement concluded by affirming that “the people of Deir Atiyah, from all sects and affiliations, will remain united in defending the unity of their town and rejecting any attempts to undermine its cohesion,” calling on all parties to embrace dialogue as the sole means to resolve disagreements.
