WELAT Journalist detained, abused in Şırnak

Media sources reported that Roni Robar Ayman, a correspondent for WELAT News Agency, was detained and subjected to torture by Turkish authorities in Şırnak, Northern Kurdistan, while en route to Southern Kurdistan to cover field events.

According to the reports, Ayman was stopped at a police checkpoint at the entrance to Cizre district due to an alleged notice against him, before being transferred to Şırnak Police Station. His lawyer, who later met with him, confirmed that Ayman is in stable health but suffered severe beatings from the moment of arrest until his arrival at the station, along with ongoing psychological pressure.

The lawyer indicated that the police continued to assault Ayman inside the Şırnak police station, forcing him to listen to songs with a racist character and confiscating his mobile phone. The lawyer called on the democratic public to express solidarity with the detained journalist, demanding his protection and the safeguarding of his legal and human rights.

Ayman was referred to the Public Prosecution for questioning amid growing concern over ongoing violations against journalists.
