Washington ends temporary protected status for Syrians, urges those covered to leave

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that the decision to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrians has taken effect, urging beneficiaries who do not have another legal status to leave the United States and warning that they could face deportation.

In a post on the social media platform X, the department said that Syria is now among the countries for which the termination of TPS has taken effect, along with Haiti, Yemen, Afghanistan, Cameroon, Nepal, Honduras, Nicaragua, Venezuela, South Sudan, Myanmar, and Somalia.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) had previously announced that Syria’s designation under the Temporary Protected Status program would end as of July 27, 2026, confirming that employment authorization documents issued solely on the basis of TPS would no longer be valid.

The implementation of the decision follows a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in June, which allowed the administration of President Donald Trump to proceed with ending the protection after a federal court had temporarily blocked the decision.
