Washington dismisses some of its prominent diplomats involved in Syria file

Five informed sources told Reuters that the United States has dismissed several senior diplomats involved in the Syria file in recent days.

The sources stated that the dismissed diplomats worked within the "Syria Regional Platform," affiliated with the US mission based in Istanbul, and reported directly to US Special Envoy for Syria Thomas Barrack.

A US diplomatic source explained that the decision to terminate the duties of some employees came as part of a reorganization of the team, stressing that US policy in Syria "will not be affected" by this move. However, Western diplomats and US-based sources considered these moves "involuntary and sudden," linking them to differences in views within the team regarding the future of the Syrian Democratic Forces and their relationship with the transitional government in Syria.

Since the closure of the US embassy in Damascus in 2012, the Syria Regional Platform in Istanbul has become the de facto US mission to Syria, with scattered offices across the region. Any changes to its staff are an indication of Washington's shifting priorities in the Syrian file.
