Vague statements by US envoy to Syria ignore facts

The US envoy to Syria, Thomas Barrack, posted a new statement about Syria on his personal account on the X platform.

He wrote: “Disturbing violence broke out yesterday in Sweida and Manbij. Diplomacy is the best path to end violence and build a peaceful, lasting solution. The United States is proud to assist in mediating a solution in Sweida and to work with France in helping reintegrate the northeast into a unified Syria.”

He added: “The path to the future belongs to the Syrian people alone, and we urge all parties to maintain calm and resolve disputes through dialogue, not bloodshed. Syria deserves stability, and Syrians deserve peace.”

Earlier this morning, four positions belonging to the SDF were again targeted for the second time in less than 24 hours by forces affiliated with the Syrian transitional government in the vicinity of Deir Hafer in the Aleppo countryside, according to a recent SDF statement. The SDF responded only to the sources of fire.

Yesterday, the SDF issued a statement asserting that “undisciplined factions” operating within the ranks of the Syrian transitional government continue to provoke and launch repeated attacks on the frontlines in the Deir Hafer area. The statement emphasized that the SDF’s response to the sources of fire falls within their right to self-defense.
