U.S. Official: Washington conditions new round of talks in Geneva on receiving Iranian proposal

A senior U.S. official told Axios today that U.S. negotiators are ready to hold a new round of talks with Iran next Friday in Geneva, provided that a detailed Iranian proposal regarding the nuclear deal is received within the next 48 hours.

The current diplomatic track is seen as the last opportunity offered by U.S. President Donald Trump to Tehran before a decision is made on a wide-scale military operation coordinated with Israel, which could target senior leaders in the Iranian regime, according to U.S. officials.

Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, are scheduled to travel to Geneva on February 27 if the Iranian proposal arrives on time, while the U.S. official confirmed that Washington is prepared to discuss a temporary agreement before reaching a comprehensive deal.

Meanwhile, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi indicated that he will finalize the drafting of the proposal by the end of the week after obtaining approval from the political leadership in Tehran.

These developments come amid domestic pressures in Washington, where Republican Senator Lindsey Graham urged President Trump to disregard voices warning against escalation, considering that “leaving evil unchecked” carries greater risks.
