U.S. Lawmaker warns Syria over threats to Kurds

A U.S. congressman warned that any threat to prisons or to Kurds and other communities in Syria would constitute a violation of the principles behind lifting Caesar Act sanctions, stressing that continued advances would trigger new, harsh U.S. sanctions.

U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer, a member of the House Committees on Intelligence and Financial Services, said that Syria’s interim government must not misinterpret the easing of U.S. sanctions. He warned that any threat to prisons holding ISIS detainees, to the security of Kurdish allies, or to the safety of ethnic communities would be considered a violation of the lifting of sanctions under the “Caesar Act.”

Gottheimer stressed that Damascus must immediately halt its advance, warning that it would face severe U.S. sanctions if violations continue.
