The campaign defending Sharifa Mohammadi announced in a statement that the UN Independent Investigations Organization has opened an investigation into the case of the activist Sharifa Mohammadi, who is detained and sentenced to death.

The statement said that the organization sent an official letter to Iran’s representative at the United Nations, containing several serious criticisms of the judicial procedures in Iran and regarding the case of Sharifa Mohammadi.

The same statement also announced that Sharifa Mohammadi’s case has attracted the attention of international organizations due to the violations she faced during interrogations, investigations, trial, and the issuance of her sentence.

The organization pointed out that Sharifa Mohammadi was sentenced to death only because of her peaceful activism and civil work, and said: "The international community must apply increased pressure to prevent the implementation of such inhumane sentences and continue to monitor the progress of this case."

Who is Sharifa Mohammadi?

She is a human rights and women’s rights activist, 45 years old, originally from the city of Urmia and currently living in Rasht, Iran.

She was arrested in December 2023 on charges of “propaganda against the state.” On July 4, 2024, the Revolutionary Court of Iran sentenced her to death.

On October 12, 2024, the sentence was temporarily overturned, but on February 13, 2025, the second chamber of the Revolutionary Court in Rasht, headed by Judge Mohammad Ali Darvish Jeftar, reinstated the sentence. Finally, on August 16, 2025, Chamber 39 of the Supreme Court of Iran upheld the death sentence against her.

According to the latest statement issued by the Campaign Against Execution Tuesday, 627 death sentences have been carried out since the beginning of this year in Eastern Kurdistan and Iran.
