UN Security Council discusses Syria, warns of ISIS threat

During the session, the representative of the interim Syrian government to the Security Council, Ibrahim Al-Albi, stated that the “new Syria” has succeeded in ending the Captagon file and has become a leader in combating drug trafficking. He also noted that national leadership has regained control of efforts to confront ISIS, alongside unprecedented cooperation with international committees. He further accused Israel of continuing violations in southern Syria.

For his part, the Deputy UN Special Envoy for Syria, Claudio Cordone, praised the interim government’s cooperation with regional and international actors, stressing the importance of these efforts in avoiding further escalation. He also commended measures taken to prevent Syrian territory from being used to expand the conflict.

On the security front, Cordone warned that ISIS remains active through attacks in the country despite its reduced territorial control, reflecting attempts to reorganize its ranks. He also called for respecting Syria’s sovereignty and adhering to the 1974 disengagement agreement.

Meanwhile, the U.S. envoy to Syria stated that President Donald Trump is focused on supporting a unified Syria. He pointed to efforts to strengthen the ceasefire in Sweida with support from United States and Jordan, as well as steps between Syria and Israel within a peace track sponsored by Washington.

In the same context, the French representative expressed support for political reconstruction in Syria and the promotion of democracy, emphasizing the need to include all components of the Syrian people and protect the country from the repercussions of regional escalation.

The Russian representative, in turn, warned that Israel’s continued occupation of the Golan Heights and areas in southern Syria increases military risks, calling for an end to what he described as attempts to weaken the Syrian state.
