UN aid convoy reaches Sweida via highway for the first time

A UN humanitarian aid convoy arrived in Sweida via the main highway from Damascus, the first such crossing since July 12, as part of efforts to respond to the growing needs resulting from recent waves of displacement

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced late yesterday that a humanitarian aid convoy successfully arrived in Sweida via the main highway from Damascus, for the first time since July 12.

The convoy, which included 19 trucks loaded with food parcels, hygiene kits, medical and nutritional supplies, fuel, and solar lamps, was joined by UN agencies and other partners.

UN staff also conducted needs assessments in the northern rural areas and the town of Salkhad to prioritize humanitarian interventions.

The office explained that recent events in Sweida have displaced more than 187,000 people since mid-July until August 25, including scattered families who have fled to southern Syria, increasing pressure on urgent humanitarian needs.

OCHA noted that the United Nations and its partners continue to intensify response efforts, with approximately 370,000 people in Sweida, Daraa, and rural Damascus receiving various forms of humanitarian assistance during July and August. OCHA emphasized the importance of ensuring continued access to support for the most affected populations.
