Turkish state postpones release of Djwar Ismail despite needing surgery

Djwar Nasri Ismail (Ridwan Ismail) was arrested by the Turkish occupation authorities in Northern Kurdistan on September 17, 1991 over his activities within the Kurdistan Liberation Movement and was sentenced to life imprisonment.

 Turkish laws stipulate that life sentences are released after 30 years in prison. Djwar Ismail has completed his sentence and spent 30 years in prison, but the Turkish authorities refuse to release him.

 Djwar Ismail's sentence ended on September 5, 2021, but the prison administration has been postponing his release for 3 or 6 months each time under various pretexts and excuses for 3 years, and recently his release was postponed for another 3 months, and the specified period ends next September, but it is not yet known whether he will be released or not.

 His family is afraid that he will not be released again

Ismail's family reported that he suffers from many diseases, and he cannot use or move his hand, but the most severe pain is in his back, so he must undergo back surgery.

 The family's visits to Dajwar are hindered and they have not been able to meet him since 2013, so they only communicate by phone.

On August 9, Djwar Ismail contacted his family and told them that he was taken to the hospital due to back pain. The doctors told him that he needed to undergo back surgery.

 The family fears that his release will be postponed. Djwar Ismail’s brother, Tawfiq Ismail indicated that his brother’s back pain is the result of the torture he was subjected to.

“He is 64 years old and does not live a normal life and does not see the sun, so his health will of course deteriorate. We demand the release of our brother" Tawfiq Ismail said.

 Tawfiq Ismail called on human rights organizations to help them release his brother. Djwar is from the village of Sanjak Saadoun, Amuda, and is currently detained in Afyonkarahisar Prison No. 1, Type T. According to the report of the Human Rights Association (ÎHD), among the 384 detainees whose release is postponed.
