The transitional government in Syria is preparing to conduct the so-called “People’s Assembly” elections before the end of this September, amid conditions described as lacking transparency and genuine guarantees for popular participation.

Nawwar Najmeh, spokesperson for the Higher Election Committee, stated that candidacy applications are currently “under review” in preparation for finalizing the electoral regulations, with a timetable for the electoral process to be announced later. However, observers consider these steps to be merely formal and not indicative of any real shift in the existing power structure.

Last month, the committee approved the formation of subcommittees to oversee the process but promptly announced the postponement of elections in areas outside its control  specifically Sweida and the northeastern and northern regions of Syria citing “security challenges.” This has further fueled doubts about the seriousness of the entire electoral process.

Analysts note that Ahmed al-Sharaa’s decree ratifying the provisional electoral system effectively enshrines a superficial cosmetic exercise, while the country remains mired in deep political and economic crises that render these elections an empty procedural formality devoid of democratic substance.

Consequently, the upcoming elections appear to be a mere reproduction of the old political scene at a time when Syrians are yearning for genuine change that would break the ongoing political deadlock engulfing the country.
