Thousands head to Newroz celebration squares in Qamishlo, Tirbespiyê, Amuda

On the occasion of Newroz, which falls on March 21 every year, residents of Qamishlo, Tirbespiyê, Amuda, and their countryside in the Jazira region started gathering at the celebration sites, which were postponed to today (24 March) due to bad weather conditions in recent days, amid enthusiastic atmospheres.

Qamishlo

In the city of Qamishlo, crowds began flowing toward the Newroz square carrying Kurdish flags and wearing traditional clothing in a highly enthusiastic atmosphere. The “12 March Martyrs Stadium” in the center of the city was decorated in Newroz colors, as the stadium was adorned with green, red, and yellow colors, Newroz slogans, and pictures of leader Abdullah Ocalan, Kawa of the era Mazlum Doğan, martyr Ziyad Afrin, the martyrs of Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood, martyr Ahmed Haiman Omar, in addition to flags of the People’s Protection Units (YPG), Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), and the Martyrs’ Families Council. 

Slogans hung in the Newroz square included: “Resistance is life, unity is strength,” “We will make the resistance of Sheikh Maqsoud the basis of national unity,” “With the fire of Newroz we will guarantee the freedom of peoples,” “With the spirit of Newroz every dream lives and every heart beats with hope,” “With the spirit of Newroz we will defeat the extermination conspiracy against our people,” “National unity is not a choice but a necessity,” “North, South, East, West… one,” and “With unity we will achieve our freedom.”

The Newroz program includes lighting the Newroz flame and a speech by Aldar Khalil, member of the Co-Presidency of the Democratic Union Party, while Shamsekhan Kalo will deliver a speech on behalf of the Martyrs’ Families Council.

Participants in Qamishlo’s Newroz include the “Martyr Hêfa” music band, artist Danish Botan, Botan music group, artist Newroz Afrin, the Martyr Welat dabke group, artist Şafqan Orkesh, the “Martyr Sakina” music band, and artist Raman Dari. 

Tirbespiyê

In Tirbespiyê, residents of the city and the villages of Jarh, Alyan, and Sanjaq began heading to the celebration square in Dirêjîk north of the city to participate in Newroz events while wearing folkloric clothing.

The Newroz square was decorated with pictures of leader Abdullah Ocalan, along with flags of the People’s Protection Units, Women’s Protection Units, the Martyrs’ Families Council, the Democratic Society Movement, and the celebration slogan.

The program includes a speech by Gharib Hasso, Co-Chair of the Democratic Union Party, and Salma Khalil, administrator in the Martyrs’ Families Council in Tirbespiyê.

The program also includes artistic, theatrical, musical, and dance performances by the groups “Martyr Xebat” music band, “Martyr Rêwan” dabke group, Bale music group, and “Martyr Sabri” theater group, in addition to the participation of artists Alan, Rebwar, Hojin Heris, and the Ramam music band.

Amuda

In the city of Amuda, residents of the city and its countryside began heading to the Newroz square in the village of Jaghir Bazar. The preparatory committee for Newroz provided transportation for citizens who do not own cars to reach the celebration site, preparing 15 transport vehicles. Some residents headed to the square using these vehicles, while others arrived in their private cars.

According to the program set by the committee, the celebration will begin at 11:00 with the lighting of the Newroz flame by the families of the martyrs, followed by speeches and artistic performances by the “Akri” music band, “Serdem” music band, the “Martyr Delila” song group, and the “Martyr Mizgin” dabke group. Artists Siban Akri, Hamouda, and Belend will also participate in the Newroz celebration.
