Tension in rural Idlib after clashes and arrests of Uzbek elements

Security tensions have escalated in rural Idlib between government security forces and foreign elements of Uzbek nationality, following arrests of a number of them and nighttime clashes.

Since Tuesday, sporadic clashes have erupted in the Idlib countryside near the towns of al-Fu'ah and Kafraya and the village of Kafr Jalis between Syrian Interim Government security forces and Uzbek fighters.

The clashes, which began after security forces arrested seven Uzbeks, continued into today, with a heavy security presence deployed on main and secondary roads in Idlib city and its surrounding countryside, particularly on the Idlib-Sarmada highway, the Bab al-Hawa border crossing, and roads leading to the areas where raids were conducted in Kafraya and al-Fu'ah.

Local sources indicated the arrival of military reinforcements for the Interim Government in the area, which is experiencing unprecedented tension. There are also reports of troop buildups at the French refugee camp near the town of Harem, as well as at Uzbek gathering points.
