Tension in Al-Dhiyabiya, rural Damascus, after youth stabbed to death

A state of tension prevailed on Saturday in the town of Al-Dhiyabiya, located in the Sayyida Zainab area south of the Syrian capital Damascus, following the killing of an 18-year-old man who was fatally stabbed with a sharp object during a quarrel with two other young men.

According to sources from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the victim was originally from the Lajat region in Daraa province and succumbed to his severe injuries before reaching the hospital.

The same sources reported that the incident sparked widespread tension in the area, particularly as the victim belonged to the Sunni community, prompting some residents to voice sectarian accusations. However, preliminary information indicates that the crime stemmed from a personal dispute and did not carry any sectarian or political motives.

The incident comes amid a growing wave of individual violence and security breakdowns witnessed across Damascus and its countryside in recent months, as security agencies struggle to maintain control amid the spread of weapons and organized crime.

According to documentation by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the number of recorded criminal and murder cases across Syrian provinces since the beginning of 2025 has risen to 310 incidents, resulting in 349 deaths, including 47 women and 28 children.
