Tel Tamr municipalities work to reopen Zerghan river channel

Over the past two days, al- Jazira canton has experienced heavy rainfall and a strong storm, which led to rising river levels and water accumulation in several areas.

The floods also caused the bridge openings on the Zerghan River in the city of Tel Tamr to become blocked, which resulted in a significant rise in water levels and the closure of the roads connecting Tel Tamr–Zerkan and Tel Tamr–Sere Kaniye. This has hindered movement and transportation in the area.

Today, municipal teams in the region began working to reopen the river channel and remove obstacles from the bridge openings in an attempt to drain the water and prevent a flood that could threaten neighborhoods near the riverbank.

Earlier, the Director of Water Resources in al-Hasakah, Engineer Abdulaziz Amin, warned residents living along the banks of the Khabur River about the possibility of floods occurring in the coming hours. He called on them to exercise caution due to the significant rise in water levels and the speed of the water flow.

Amin explained that the river’s water flow rate has exceeded 50 cubic meters per second as a result of torrential floods caused by heavy rainfall and the rising water levels in the river’s tributaries, particularly the Jarjab and Zerghan rivers.

The rising water level of the Khabur River also led this morning to the international road (M4) going out of service again west of the city of Tel Tamr, after water overflowed onto parts of the road. This occurred shortly after the road had been reopened and traffic had partially resumed.
