Talking about preparations to form community administration in Suwayda

Popular demonstrations have been continuing in Suwayda (southern Syria) for several months, against the policies of the Damascus government and its failure to resolve the crises taking place in the country.

Despite these demonstrations, the Damascus government continues to ignore the demands of the demonstrators, and continues its economic and security policies, where it has resorted to raising the prices of fuel and food again.

In addition to economic demands, the people of Suwayda are demanding political transition, decentralization, and the release of detainees.

Momentum and strong will

The activist from Suwayda and the Executive Director of the Uprising Media Center in Suwayda, Areej Naeem, spoke to ANHA's agency about these demonstrations, and pointed out that the Suwayda movement will continue for 190 days and enter the seventh month of the popular uprising, with the same momentum, strength of will, and insistence on implementing the right demands and adhering to them without the slightest reaction. An action by the Damascus government, despite the long and peaceful wave of protests.

The Damascus government is unable to provide solutions

Areej Naeem touched on the Damascus government’s response to these demonstrations, saying: “The response to them was silence, continuing to raise prices, arbitrarily dismissing the demonstrators, creating strife among the people of Suwayda through their affiliated factions, infiltrating the demonstrators, and creating divisions among them, trying to split ranks and play with the time factor, hoping they would get bored and withdraw from the demonstrations.” Their firm demands, which they will not give up, begin with political change, the release of detainees, knowing the fate of the forcibly disappeared, and affirming the unity of Syrian lands by rejecting partition, rejecting foreign presence, and demographic change, and ending with the fight against drugs.”

She noted that "the southern region was transformed into a transit zone for drug and Captagon smugglers, which exposed it to bombardment several times, the most recent of which was the Arman massacre, which claimed the lives of ten civilians, including women and children, in addition to the government's inability to find solutions after a war that lasted thirteen years, which led to the spread of poverty and the deterioration of the living condition, water scarcity and power cuts.

The Syrian activist from Suwayda confirmed that “anger and oppression dominate the features of all Syrians, with no hope for the dormant government that has not been shaken by bombing, hunger, or displacement, which prompted unions to participate and demand the separation of unions from power and their efforts to form political currents.”

A unified political body and societal administration

The Executive Director of the Uprising Media Center in Suwayda concluded her speech by saying: “The uprising is still producing new paths of peaceful political, revolutionary and civil action, which has decided not to back down until it achieves the desired freedom. Suwayda is also preparing to form a unified political body under the directives of the spiritual presidency calling for consensus among the components and unification of visions.” Which also produces a new form of community management that exercises its role by highlighting the corruption of state institutions, such as the Water and Education Corporation, where the movement formed committees to follow up on their work in light of the intended government negligence.”
