The head of the Damascus government, Ahmad al-Sharaa, arrived in France today on an official visit, accompanied by his Foreign Minister, Asaad al-Shaibani, and the head of the Emergency and Disaster Management Authority, Raed al-Saleh. The visit was at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron, according to media reports.
This is al-Sharaa's first visit to Europe since assuming power following the fall of the Baath regime last December. It comes amid escalating discussions within the European Union regarding the future of the relationship with the Damascus government, amid French calls to link any international support to Damascus's commitment to the principles of justice and political transition.
The visit sparked widespread controversy in French political circles, and Syrians in France protested in front of the Élysée Palace, expressing their rejection of hosting the head of the Damascus government, and their assertion that this step comes without consideration for the Syrian people's demands for justice and political transition.
