Syriac women pledge role in building Syria’s future

The conference of the Syriac Women’s Union in Syria represents an important milestone in the history of Syriac women, amid ongoing efforts to strengthen their participation in public life and preserve their role within their community. On the sidelines of the conference, several union members spoke about the challenges facing women’s work, as well as their aspirations for the future of Syriac women and their role.

They also highlighted the importance of increasing efforts to safeguard women’s status and preserve the identity and culture of every component, while drawing attention to the situation of Syriac women and what they can contribute during the current and coming stages.

In this context, Siham Qaryo, a member of the Syriac Women’s Organization, told ANHA agency that establishing the union initially faced numerous challenges and concerns under the former regime. She noted that Syriac women entered a new phase of activism with the outbreak of the Syrian crisis, continuing the struggle of the women of Beth Nahrain.

She added that Syriac women continue to follow in the footsteps of martyr Aysal, who she described as a role model for Syriac women, in pursuit of their aspirations to improve women’s circumstances, strengthen their role and empower them to participate in decision-making.

Qaryo concluded by calling on Syriac women and all women in Syria to actively participate in various institutions and defend women’s rights, stressing the importance of strengthening solidarity and cooperation among women from all Syrian communities.

Meanwhile, Sawsan Abdel-Ahad, a member of the organization in Hasakah, said holding the conference represented an important achievement for Syriac women, as it was the result of 13 years of sustained efforts and work.

She stressed that Syriac women are an essential part of Syrian society and work alongside women from different communities to contribute to building Syria, noting the major responsibility women carry in building generations and societies.

Sawsan added that Syriac women seek to demonstrate their presence and ability to shoulder responsibilities and become active partners in building a new Syria. She called on women to continue their work and activism and preserve the achievements made during the previous period.

She expressed confidence that joint action and solidarity would contribute to achieving the goals and aspirations of Syriac women.

The Syriac Women’s Union held its sixth conference in Qamishlo on Friday, August 28, with the participation of 255 members, under the slogan “Hand in hand, we build people and the homeland.” During the conference, the union changed its name to the Syriac Women’s Organization and adopted a number of recommendations to serve as a work strategy for the coming phase.
