Syriac Union Party calls for safe, dignified return of Serê Kaniyê residents

The Executive Body of the Syriac Union Party issued a statement on Tuesday regarding the return of residents of Serê Kaniyê / Ras al-Ayn and the attacks targeting the convoy of returnees.

In its statement, the party said that the return of displaced people to their homes and communities is an inherent right that must not be relinquished or obstructed, stressing that this right should apply to all residents of the region without discrimination or exclusion.

It said that the return of residents of Ras al-Ayn under the understanding and agreement reached with the Syrian government, and with its guarantees, must be respected and upheld by all parties. It added that the attack, vandalism and beatings targeting the convoy of returnees after it arrived in Serê Kaniyê were unacceptable and served no party’s interests.

The statement warned that such actions would only serve to increase tensions and create an atmosphere of hostility and discord among the people of the region, potentially opening the door to reciprocal reactions that everyone could do without.

It called on the Syrian government, as well as all local parties, forces and community actors, to assume their responsibilities, ensure the security and protection of returnees, respect the agreements and decisions reached, and work to ensure that all displaced people can return to their homes safely and with dignity.

The statement stressed that respecting the right to return, as well as the agreements and guarantees, is everyone’s responsibility and is the path to stability, preventing discord and protecting the region’s social fabric.
