Israeli officials and representatives of Syria’s transitional government are meeting today in Paris to resume talks on a new security agreement, an Israeli official told the Axios website.

The new round is being held under the mediation of the US President’s envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, and aims to “reach a security agreement that includes the demilitarization of southern Syria, in exchange for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Syrian areas they seized following the fall of the Assad regime.”

The talks are expected to last two days, with the participation of the transitional government’s foreign minister, Asaad al-Shaibani, alongside a new Israeli negotiating team.

This round is the fifth of its kind and the first in nearly two months, after talks were suspended due to sharp disagreements between the two sides and the resignation of the former chief Israeli negotiator, Ron Dermer.

According to the website, Netanyahu has formed a new negotiating team headed by Israel’s ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, with the participation of Netanyahu’s military adviser, General Roman Gofman, as well as the acting national security adviser, Gil Reich.
