Suspect shot dead inside Latakia criminal court

A shooting took place today inside a courtroom at the criminal court in Latakia province, killing a suspect who was appearing before the court on charges of killing the gunman’s brother.

According to information from eyewitnesses, the victim’s brother pulled out a pistol he had concealed while inside the courtroom and opened fire at the suspect, killing him instantly, in the presence of judges and lawyers.

The suspect had been standing trial in connection with a murder case before the hearing turned into the scene of a new crime after the victim’s brother managed to bring the weapon into the courtroom and use it against the suspect.

Following the incident, work at the criminal court in Latakia was suspended. However, no detailed official information had been issued by the time of publication regarding the fate of the gunman or the measures taken against him.

The incident has once again raised questions about security measures inside courthouses and the protection of judges, lawyers and litigants, particularly in criminal cases involving relatives of victims and defendants.
