Student killed in Latakia after being beaten during robbery attempt

In the midst of ongoing insecurity and lawlessness across areas controlled by the Transitional Government in Syria, a new crime has shaken the coastal city of Latakia, where a young student from the Al-Saliba Project neighborhood was killed after being brutally assaulted with a blunt object by unidentified assailants attempting to rob him.

According to available information, the incident occurred on October 2 along the Latakia–Jableh road, as the young man was returning home from his grandfather’s orchard. He was intercepted by a group of unknown individuals who tried to steal his motorcycle, money, and mobile phone before violently attacking him, striking his head with a fatal blow that left him unconscious.

He was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, suffering from a severe brain hemorrhage caused by a fractured skull. After several days in a coma, he passed away on Wednesday from his injuries.

This incident follows a series of similar crimes and security violations across Syria’s coastal cities, as well as in parts of Homs and Hama, which have fueled public anger and tension. Among them was the kidnapping of a schoolboy, Mohammad Qais Haidar, in Latakia — a case that deeply shocked the local community and renewed concerns over the worsening state of security and public order.

In response, popular initiatives in the coastal region have called for a general strike affecting schools and universities, to protest against the absence of security and the rising wave of abductions and killings.
