Six people killed in protests in Iran

Since 28 December, Iran has been witnessing popular protests over soaring living expenses and worsening economic conditions. These protests have so far resulted in the deaths of six people since their outbreak.

According to Iran’s Fars News Agency, two people were reported killed in the city of Lordegan in southwestern Iran after protesters pelted government buildings with stones, including the governorate building, a mosque, official institutions, and several banks, prompting police to intervene using tear gas.

The agency added that a number of individuals accused of leading the protest movement in the city were arrested. Lordegan has a population of around 40,000 and is located approximately 650 kilometers from Tehran.

In Lorestan Province in western Iran, Fars reported the deaths of three civilians and the injury of 17 others during stone-throwing clashes near a police station in the city of Azna.

Authorities in Tehran also arrested 30 people on charges of “disrupting public order,” according to Tasnim News Agency, in the city of Malard west of the Iranian capital.

Meanwhile, Lorestan Deputy Governor Saeed Pour Ali announced the death of a Basij member in the city of Kuhdasht, along with injuries to 13 police officers and military personnel.

Iran has been experiencing high inflation for years, with the rial losing more than one-third of its value against the US dollar over the past year. Annual inflation reached around 52% in December 2025, significantly affecting citizens’ purchasing power.
