SDC: Agreement is step toward ending escalation for new political phase

The Syrian Democratic Council issued a statement today regarding the agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Interim Government, stating: “The Council views the recent agreement between the Syrian Interim Government and the Syrian Democratic Forces as a step within a complex trajectory aimed at ending escalation, preventing a slide into further chaos, and preparing the conditions for a new political phase that requires addressing the root causes of the conflict rather than merely managing its consequences.

The Council emphasizes that any political or security understandings can only be assessed by the extent of their practical commitment to protecting civilians, guaranteeing Syrians’ civil and political rights, ensuring the safe and dignified return of displaced persons, and preserving civil peace and social stability.

The Syrian Democratic Council’s approach to these developments is consistent with its political vision based on dialogue and peaceful solutions, and with its awareness of the scale of transformations taking place in Syria and the region, which necessitate a responsible transition from managing geography and conflict to national political action and the building of broad Syrian consensus.

In this context, the Council affirms that its support for any negotiation process reflects its role as a democratic political force seeking to prevent the return of authoritarianism and to reject the reproduction of the causes of the crisis.

In the same context, the Syrian Democratic Council strongly condemns the resort to violence and military confrontation as a means of managing political disagreements. It believes that the military escalation witnessed in the Syrian coast, in Suwayda, and then in North and East Syria—followed by partial and temporary agreements—reflects an evasion of the core responsibility of ensuring the success of the transitional phase and building an inclusive national path toward a political solution.

The Council stresses that the current phase requires rebuilding trust among the components of the Syrian people, preventing sedition, strengthening Arab–Kurdish partnership, and consolidating the role of civil and political forces as the true guarantor of the country’s unity and stability, away from the logic of domination or exclusion. It also reaffirms its commitment to maintaining its national and international relations that support stability, counterterrorism, and the protection of rights and freedoms, within the framework of respect for Syrian sovereignty and the will of its people.

As the Syrian Democratic Council follows this delicate phase and the challenges it entails, it reaffirms its continued work in accordance with its national political program and its assumption of historical responsibilities, based on its conviction that what Syria is experiencing today is not the end of a process, but rather a moment of transformation that requires all democratic forces to reorganize their roles and defend Syrians’ aspirations for freedom, dignity, justice, and democracy.”
