Riyadh to host expanded meeting on Syria tomorrow

Riyadh will host an expanded meeting on Syria tomorrow, with the participation of foreign ministers from the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Britain, Germany, and other countries. The United States and Italy will also participate at the level of Deputy Foreign Minister.

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to Syria are expected to participate.

This meeting is a continuation of the "Aqaba Meetings" on Syria, which were held in Jordan on December 14.

The Aqaba Meetings statement indicated that the United States, the Arab Contact Group on Syria, Bahrain, France, Germany, Qatar, Turkey, the UAE, Britain, the European Union, and the UN Special Envoy to Syria affirmed their full support for Syria’s unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty.

The Arab Contact Group on Syria held a meeting in Aqaba, Jordan, on December 14, with ministers and representatives of those countries and parties to discuss the latest developments in Syria, and issued a joint statement, in which they affirmed their full support for the Syrian people “at this critical moment in their history to build a more hopeful, secure, and peaceful future.”
