Returnees to Afrin face multiple challenges after 9 years of displacement

A number of Afrin residents who have recently returned to their city after years of displacement have begun rehabilitating their damaged homes. However, the extent of the destruction, combined with soaring construction material costs, has significantly hindered reconstruction efforts amid the severe economic hardships facing the local population.

Several returnees said their homes had been looted and vandalized by Turkish occupation-backed mercenaries, with doors, windows, and household belongings stolen. Other homes sustained damage during the military operations that took place in the area, placing an even greater burden on returning families.

Residents also noted that some houses remain occupied, with settlers demanding financial compensation in exchange for vacating them. This has prevented many families from returning to their homes and has further compounded their struggle to secure adequate housing.

The returnees called on the relevant authorities to address these issues as a matter of urgency, particularly by restoring homes to their rightful owners and removing the obstacles preventing the return of displaced residents. They stressed that such measures are essential to ensuring stability and enabling families to rebuild their lives in their hometown.
