Residents of Garkê Legê: Physical Freedom for leader Ocalan key to success of peace process

Calls to create the necessary conditions for the success of the peace process and a democratic society continue, with residents of Garkê Legê stressing that physical freedom for leader Abdullah Ocalan represents a key step towards launching a genuine phase of peace and stability in the region.

In this context, ANHA agency spoke to a number of residents of Garkê Legê. Citizen Shawkat Muslim said the process launched by leader Abdullah Ocalan and based on peace and democracy represents an important option for the peoples of the Middle East. He noted that Öcalan has offered what no other party has provided over the past years, making it necessary to secure his physical freedom.

He added that Abdullah Ocalan should be among his people and participate directly in advancing the peace process, stressing that his continued imprisonment runs counter to the requirements of the current phase and that his physical freedom would be a key step towards achieving peace.

For his part, citizen Mohammed Ali said that the physical freedom of leader Abdullah Ocalan means the freedom of the people, stressing that the Kurdish people regard the leader's freedom as a fundamental element that cannot be overlooked in the peace process. He said reaching a lasting solution requires Ocalan's direct participation in the process.

He called on the United Nations and relevant organisations to fulfil their responsibilities and work to secure Abdullah Ocalan's physical freedom, enabling the peace process and the building of a democratic society to continue. He said the leader's physical freedom represents the first step towards ensuring the success of the process.

Meanwhile, citizen Salma Ibrahim said the first step the Turkish state should take to ensure the success of the peace process is to guarantee leader Abdullah Ocalan's physical freedom.

She added that leader Abdullah Ocalan was the one who proposed the option of peace and dialogue and therefore should be released from prison so that he can contribute to advancing the process towards success. She stressed that securing his physical freedom would open the way for a new phase based on dialogue and mutual understanding and help reduce the crises facing the region.
