Residents of Çil Axa protest deteriorating living conditions, declining basic services

Various areas of Syria have been experiencing difficult living conditions for some time, accompanied by declining basic services and rising living costs. This has prompted residents in several cities to stage protests and rallies demanding improved living and service conditions and the provision of basic necessities.

In the Jazira, similar demands have been repeatedly raised in a number of cities and towns, as residents voice their dissatisfaction with declining services, rising prices and difficulties in securing daily necessities.

Against this backdrop, residents of Çil Axa in the Jazira held a protest demanding improved living and service conditions. ANHA spoke to several protesters who outlined the main problems they face and the demands they believe should be addressed urgently.

Basil Darwish said basic services in the area had deteriorated rather than improved, noting that current living conditions were increasing the burden on residents amid rising prices for essential goods and difficulties in meeting daily needs.

Electricity: From Previous Improvement to Long Hours of Power Cuts

Darwish also addressed the electricity situation in Çil Axa, explaining that the installation of electronic meters had helped improve electricity supplies and ease some of the hardship residents had endured for years.

He said the situation had changed recently, with long hours of power cuts, particularly during the daytime and periods of high temperatures, making electricity once again one of the main problems facing the city's residents.

He noted that power outages affect not only households but also shops, businesses and various aspects of daily life, calling for solutions to improve electricity supplies and reduce prolonged outages.

Concerns Over Bread Supplies

Darwish also spoke about bread supplies, saying its quality had declined and supplies had become irregular, raising concerns among residents that the problem could worsen.

He said intermittent shortages of flour had caused concern among residents over the possibility of a complete interruption of bread supplies. He added that the situation had made it difficult to obtain bread, while not all residents could afford to rely on purchasing commercial bread on a regular basis.

He stressed that bread is an essential commodity that cannot be dispensed with, calling for closer monitoring of bakeries, continuous supplies of flour and bread, and the provision of good-quality bread to all neighborhoods of the city.

Demands Cover Electricity, Bread, Sanitation and Prices

For his part, Idel Mohammed Said Yousef said protesters' demands were not limited to a single service sector but covered various living and service issues that directly affect residents' lives.

He said electricity, bread and sanitation were among the main demands, along with rising prices and the ban on using the old Syrian currency at a time when the new currency is unavailable in markets, making daily transactions more difficult for residents.

Yousef stressed the need for practical and urgent solutions to these problems and greater oversight of markets and services to ease the burden on residents.

He said deteriorating living conditions had become a major burden on citizens amid continued service problems and the lack of tangible solutions.

Waste Adds to Problems on City Streets

Yousef also highlighted sanitation problems in Çil Axa, criticizing what he described as the failure of service institutions to carry out their duties, particularly regarding waste collection and street cleaning.

He pointed to accumulated waste in several streets and in the city's market, warning that the continued situation would affect public cleanliness and could worsen the problem, particularly as other cities in the region face similar issues.

He called on the relevant authorities to assume their responsibilities and introduce serious and swift solutions to the sanitation problem, alongside addressing other service-related issues.

He stressed that residents' demands aim to secure better living conditions and ensure access to the basic services they need on a daily basis.

Calls for Practical Solutions

Ahmed Darwish also joined the residents' demands, saying deteriorating living conditions and declining services in the city had become an additional burden on residents.

He said the problems affected various aspects of daily life amid the absence of clear and swift solutions from the relevant authorities, urging institutions and officials responsible for service sectors to listen to residents' complaints and address them seriously.

Darwish stressed that addressing these demands through practical measures could help improve living and service conditions in Çil Axa, emphasizing the need to turn residents' demands into concrete measures and solutions that directly improve their daily lives.
