Reconstructing educational System in NE Syria: New Steps toward Compensation and Integration

 The Education Authority of the Autonomous Administration is committed to resuming education in schools that were previously controlled by the former regime, with particular attention to the needs of displaced students.

 In this context, ANHA agency met with Khalaf Al-Matar, the Co-Chair of the Education Authority in the Autonomous Democratic Administration, to discuss the state of education following the collapse of the previous regime in Syria.

 Al-Matar emphasized the importance of the new direction adopted by the Autonomous Administration to advance the educational process in schools formerly located in the security zones of Qamishlo and Hasaka. He explained that a comprehensive assessment has been conducted to evaluate these schools' needs and resources. He confirmed that education would continue uninterrupted, with students pursuing their studies until completing their respective educational stages.

 Additionally, Al-Matar noted that financial studies are underway to restore schools that were under the former regime’s control, aiming to rehabilitate them to suitable conditions. He stressed the cultural and religious significance of these schools for the diverse components of the region's society, particularly Christian components. He assured that education in these schools would respect the cultural and religious specificities of each component.

 15,000 Displaced Students from Afrin and Shahba

 Al-Matar revealed that approximately 15,000 students displaced from Afrin and Shahba have sought refuge in NE Syria. While many students in Jazira Canton have been directly integrated into local schools, the Education Authority in Raqqa is dedicating new facilities to accommodate those forcibly displaced from Afrin and Shahba. This is particularly significant, given that these students were receiving education in Kurdish before their displacement.

 Addressing Educational Gaps

Regarding educational losses among students whose schools were repurposed as shelters for Afrin and Shahba’s displaced populations, Al-Matar stated: “Plans are underway to address these educational gaps through intensive classes in the coming days or by establishing summer clubs to ensure the academic standards of students remain unaffected.”
