Raqqa marks July 19 Revolution, calls for decentralized Syria

The city of Raqqa celebrated the 13th anniversary of the July 19 Revolution this evening, a pivotal turning point for NE Syria. The celebration, organized by the Executive Council of Raqqa Canton, took place at the Municipal Stadium Square in central Raqqa, attended by hundreds of residents. 

It began with a minute of silence in honor of the martyrs. The event, held in the spirit of a revolution aimed at building a democratic and decentralized Syria, featured speeches from community leaders and diverse artistic performances that emphasized the principles upon which the revolution was founded.

 The celebration opened with a speech by Meshleb al-Turkan, the Co-President of the Executive Council of Raqqa Canton, who recalled the revolution’s beginnings and the importance of the achievements gained through the sacrifices of the people. Al-Turkan stressed the importance of Syrian unity amid the country’s ongoing civil war and sectarian strife, emphasizing that a decentralized state is the most suitable solution to advance Syria and ensure the rights of all its components.

This was followed by a speech from Siwar Raqqa, the leader in the Raqqa Military Council, who highlighted the role of military forces in protecting the revolution and its gains, affirming their commitment to continue the struggle for a safe and stable future for the region.

He also reiterated support for the revolution’s path toward a decentralized democratic Syria.

A speech by Jihan Mohammed, the member of the Zenobia Women’s Gathering, garnered significant attention. In her address, Mohammed commemorated the 13th anniversary of the glorious July 19 Revolution, praising the sacrifices of the peoples of NE Syria, particularly the women who “formed the essence and fiery spirit of the revolution.”

Jihan Mohammed added: “The July 19 Revolution marked the beginning of a new path toward a liberating democratic project that broke the shackles of nationalism and authoritarianism, opening horizons for building a pluralistic, participatory society.
