Rain spreads across Syria with heavier rainfall expected on Saturday

Rainfall across Syria is expected to expand today and intensify in the early hours of Saturday morning, particularly in the central, southern and northeastern regions. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast in coastal areas as the country comes under the influence of the outer edges of a polar-originating low-pressure system.

Several parts of Syria are experiencing rainfall of varying intensity today, with precipitation expected to spread over the coming hours to include coastal areas, the north and northeast, gradually extending to parts of the central and southern regions. Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms is possible in several areas.

According to weather forecasts, rainfall is expected to become more widespread during the afternoon and evening, particularly along the coast, where it is forecast to cover most coastal areas and intensify in some locations. Rain is also expected to extend to scattered areas in northern, central and southern Syria, with showers possible in the capital, Damascus.

The forecasts indicate that rainy conditions will continue overnight, with precipitation expected to intensify and spread further after midnight and during the early hours of Saturday morning, particularly in the central, southern and northeastern regions. Limited and scattered showers may also reach parts of the Syrian Badia and eastern Syria.

Winds will be southeasterly in the eastern region and Jazira, and westerly to southwesterly in other areas. They will generally be light, becoming stronger during the afternoon. Sea conditions are expected to remain slight, with low waves or slightly higher.

Regarding the weather system, forecasts indicate that Syria is currently being affected by the outer edges of a polar-originating low-pressure system centered east of the Black Sea and over Turkey, rather than a fully developed low-pressure system directly affecting the country.

They noted that there is a distinction between being affected by the outer edges of low-pressure systems and the resulting rainfall activity, and being directly affected by a fully developed low-pressure system.
