Protests, security tensions witnessed in Istanbul

Since Sunday night, hundreds of people have been gathering and protesting near the headquarter of the Republican People's Party (CHP) in Istanbul, rejecting a court ruling to remove the party's leadership. This followed a siege imposed by the Turkish authorities on the headquarter.

In a late-night speech, CHP leader Özgür Özel urged the party's advocators to defy the siege, break through the barriers, and reach the party office. He said, "Whoever defends CHP defends the Republic."

When protesters attempted to break the siege and reach the CHP branch, they were repressed by the Turkish authorities. The area surrounding the headquarter in Sarıyer area was closed off, but the demonstrators gathered and attempted to breach the checkpoints.

To prevent a larger number of protesters from arriving, the governor of Istanbul, appointed by the authorities, quickly imposed a three-day ban on protests in several areas of the city.

Protesters considered the ruling, which annulled the results of the party congress held in 2023 on the grounds of "voting irregularities," a move targeting the party and paving the way for a new administration to be imposed by the judiciary.

The leader of the party Özgür Özel faces charges from the Turkish authorities, while these measures are part of escalating political harassment.

In recent months, the authorities have arrested a number of the party leaders and mayors affiliated with the party, including Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imam Oglu, and placed those municipalities under guardianship from the authorities, in cases that observers describe as "manipulated."
